ElectaFile Short Summary: 1Q Plus Reports are Due “Quickly” This Year. 1 Week Away. $500 Fines are Not Fun! Here’s Why…

OK.The “even” year is the busy year for campaign finance reporting. This year is particularly “busy” early because you all just filed your end of year semi-annual reports on January 26 (less than a month ago…). You now have a 1Q Plus Report due on February 27, 2024 (one week from now…).

The quick turn around is explained by the fact that this is a presidential election year. And the law expects reports to be disclosed before the primary on March 5. This means that by February 27, 2024 all sides will be able to see what sort of political activity happened through February 17, 2024.

By our count, this means you’ll have only 48 calendar days of activity to report (31 Days in January plus 17 Days in February) which likely is the shortest reporting window in North Carolina’s political cycle.

Many of you have already filed—if so, congratulations. If you or your political brethren or sistren haven’t yet filed, please go ahead and do it. The $50/day and $200/day fines are the easiest thing in the world to avoid.

If you have open fact questions (e.g., you lack a receipt for a lunch that your chairman had at the Roast Grill…), file what you can in a timely fashion and make notes to fully disclose the item—then come back later and amend as necessary.
