How to Know the Campaign Finance Calendar Cold

ElectaFile Short Summary: We’ve cleared the End of Year Semi Annual Report deadline of January 26. The next deadline is just under 1 month away. There are ways to manage these deadlines with less stress. This post helps. Start by entering transactions weekly!

OK. Y’all are campaign finance treasurers or their friends and family. Well done on last Friday’s deadline!

We have three pieces of advice to manage what is a busy reporting year under North Carolina law.

First, if your committee did not file, go ahead and file. Every day stacks up higher fines.

Second, if you are hesitating to file because you have data holes, i.e., you’re waiting on information regarding a receipt or an expenditure, go ahead and file. You can amend and supplement information when you have it. There’s no limits on amendments. As long as you are conveying accurate information with margin notes where you are seeking additional information, in our opinion, that’s better than letting the penalty clock run.

Third, with the short fuse on the next deadline (February 27, 2024), all of you go ahead and start entering transactions. The small dollar credit donations are the most cumbersome, and the State Board requires transaction specific details (even under the $50 threshold). You can do this on the State Software and on ElectaFile. This is the single most important quality of life step that treasurers can take between now and February 27, 2024.
